Nutritional Clinic Services
Nutritional clinic is a centre for nutrition counselling provided by registered nutritionists and dietitians who are educated, trained and competent to offer advice on healthy eating. Nutritional clinic services are available to all who need professional help to improve their eating habits and subsequently, their overall health and well-being. Most nutritional clinics, however, also offer specialised services designed to help manage nutrition-related health problems and needs. Examples include:
-
Overweight and obesity. Excess body weight isn’t caused by poor nutrition alone but rather a combination of unhealthy, high-calorie (and low-nutrient!) diet and inadequate physical activity. In order to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, it is thus crucial to follow a plan which foresees changes in both eating and exercise habits.
-
Diabetes. Just like overweight and obesity, diabetes is most often a result of poor eating and exercise habits. And just like weight management, diabetes management involves changes in both eating and exercise habits. Nutritional clinics provide advice and guidance on diabetes meal plans which don’t only help the patients keep their blood sugar levels within the target ranges. They also include tips and tricks on how to make diabetic diet tasty and enjoyable.
-
Food allergies and intolerances. Unfortunately, food allergies and intolerances are quite common in both children and adults. Nutritional clinic services on the issue include education about the risks and dangers associated with food allergies and intolerances, advice on avoiding the hidden food allergens, how to recognise symptoms of food allergy/intolerance and more. Many nutritional clinics also offer allergy tests to identify foods that need to be avoided.
-
Digestive disorders and gastrointestinal diseases (e.g. anorexia, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis, colitis and more). Many digestive disorders and gastrointestinal diseases are directly caused by improper diet and nutrition. While a change of eating habits isn’t always enough to restore health, it plays an integral role in both treatment and management of virtually all digestive disorders and gastrointestinal diseases.
-
Cardiovascular disease. Another condition that is closely associated with unhealthy lifestyle including poor diet is treated with a combination of medications and lifestyle changes which also foresee dietary changes. Due to the prevalence of the condition in the UK (and other Western countries), most nutritional clinics also offer advice and guidance on healthy eating plan for cardiovascular disease patients.
-
Other. Many nutritional clinics also provide counselling to both groups and individuals with a range of other medical conditions and special nutritional needs including cancer, pregnancy/maternity, hypertension, high cholesterol, HIV/AIDS, genetic disorders, sports nutrition, vegetarian/vegan nutrition, nutrition for the elderly, tube feeding and more.
