Nutrition Educational Services
Nutrition and health go hand in hand. While healthy nutrition helps prevent a number of health problems, maintain a healthy body weight and promote the overall health, poor nutrition has the opposite effect. This is because it is usually high in calories and low in nutrients. The result? Increased risk of overweight and obesity as well as a range of related health problems including diabetes and heart disease.
Nutrition Education for Healthier Eating and Living
Nutrition education refers to a set of strategies, techniques and approaches designed to promote healthy dietary choices, facilitate adoption of healthy nutrition and raise the awareness about the importance of healthy eating and living for the overall health. Usually delivered in the form of nutrition classes, programmes and training at individual or group level, nutrition education covers the basics of healthy eating including the importance of particular nutrients, the recommended daily allowances, the best sources, etc. But most educational services usually also cover:
-
Healthy diet. The focus is on the major food groups that should be included in most people’s dietary plan - fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts, lean meat, legumes, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and foods high in health fats such as fatty fish and olive oil – and ideal amounts of each group.
-
Healthy cooking. In addition to providing guidance and advice on health cooking techniques, the goal is also to demonstrate that healthy cooking doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming. On the contrary, there are many easy and quick recipes for both healthy and tasty meals.
-
Food safety and handling. If improperly handled, some foods can be very dangerous. Nutrition education therefore also covers the basics of food safety and handling including proper storage, hygiene and more.
-
Shopping tips & tricks. Example includes tips and advice on buying the healthiest, freshest and tastiest foods without breaking the bank.
Organic Vs Non-Organic
There has been a lot of debate about which is better, healthier and more nutritious – organic or non-organic food? The results of scientific studies are inconclusive, however, many nutritionists and dietitians give the advantage to organic foods.
They argue that while the nutritional value may be comparable or the same, organic products are healthier because they are grown without the use of pesticides and because they don’t contain artificial additives. Also, they are claimed to be more environmentally friendly than those grown by using the conventional production methods. But organic foods are more expensive. And because they don’t contain preservatives, they usually spoil faster.
